Last morning in Vienna.

. We are going light on breakfast as we noticed we are not shrinking in size.

. Also finished early so we could go back to the dessert shop and get one of the cherry desserts she saw being made on the video they were playing. When we got to the shop they did not have much out yet. Rather than settle for yesterdays leftovers we decided we had time to go to the Demel shop. It was another 1/2 mile but they would have fresh pickings and Diane could watch the cooks baking for a little bit through the glass walls in the kitchen. Diane picked a cremehorn and a raspberry cheesecake.

. We took them as take away and headed back to the hotel to pick up our bags and head for the train.

. Catching the right trains was uneventful and boring. That is good. While waiting for the train to Salzburg we overheard people talking about Budipest being a nice place to visit. Good food. Plentiful, tasty, and cheap.
Slept off and on to Salzburg. Updated the previous web pages - fixed many typos and uploaded a few more pictures.
Arrived in Salzburg at 3. Went straight to the Tourist Info office for directions to the hotel. It is only 1 block away if you head in the right direction. Thanks to excellent directions, and a map, we made it to the hotel with no problems..

.
Very nice lady at the desk. The hotel has been in the same family since 1901. Pleasant room. Yes that is a poster of the 4 poster bed with canopy. It's not a real fancy hotel. Just old and well maintained. Chandelliers for lighting, a sitting room off the lobby with a piano, chess boards and an old juke box with old songs.
Plenty of room in the sitting area

.
. Now it is off to the old town to explore.

The river walk
Walked along the river toward the old town.

.
.
We found out later these birds are supposed to have feathers growing out of their feet. It allows them to walk on top of the snow during the winter.

Mellencamp Garden
Took a detour into this garden. There were a couple of guys playing guitar with a bucket asking for money. If you have to practice, you may as well practive in a public place with a bucket for coins. Anyway we found out a lot of the Sound of Music scenes were shot in Salzberg especialy singing scenes in this park. We will need to watch the movie when we get home.

The water wheel runs a generator that is used to grind wheast into flour and run a bakery. The rye bread was very good.

We hope to listen to some Mozart music Thursday night in this castle. Should be interesting getting back to the hotel in the dark. The only downside of the hotel is that the neighborhood is not the same as it was 100 years ago. Hopefully there will not be any material for an exciting story Thursday night. We have noticed men with large thick mustaches standing in doorways in the evenings.

.
. The old town does have a revenue generating section. There are 50-100 small shops clustered in the narrow streets. Every time we were down there we saw 100's of people. Mostly tourists. Diane saw a lady selling a kitchen gadget that we are likey to come home with. There clearly is no more room in the 2nd or 3rd drawer for another gadget but we clearly need a tool that whips eggs or foams milk for hot chocolate. There is a large farmers market scheduled for Thursday. We won't be hiking Thursday.
